Youth in West End face many challenges – single parent homes, poverty, gang violence – that make life seem overwhelming at times. But we believe that God has given each of us all that we need to overcome. We not only want our youth to believe in God, but we want them to know that God believes in them.
Here is how we do it:
Wednesday Night Bible study: Every Wednesday night from 6-7:30, youth ages 5-20 come to Urban Ministry (1229 Cotton Ave SW) for dinner and Bible study
Food and Family: What we teach our kids is not as important as the relationships we form with them. Therefore, once a month, members of our church and volunteers from other churches, open their homes to small groups of our kids. We sit around a table and share a meal together…like a family. We don’t “teach” the kids anything. Rather, we focus on creating an environment where they feel comfortable to share what is good and what is hard in their lives right now, knowing that they will receive love and support.
CCWW and Collision – Church without Walls Youth and Collision student ministry at First Church Birmingham have formed a partnership where we attend each other’s Bible studies once a month and go on retreats and mission trips together. Our youth and the youth from First Church come from very different backgrounds. We are mostly black. They are mostly white. Many of us live in poverty and many of them in affluence. But through this partnership, we have learned that we have much more in common than meets the eye. Genuine friendships have formed and we believe we are modeling the coming reality of God’s kingdom – that all will be one in Christ.
